IMPORTANT: This information is approved as part of the Product Label. All instructions within this section must be read carefully in order to obtain safe and successful use of this product.

GOLTIX FLOWABLE is a versatile crop safe selective herbicide with contact and residual properties acting by both leaf and root uptake for the control of annual weeds in sugar beet, red beet, fodder beet and mangels.

GOLTIX FLOWABLE can be used in two ways:

i) As a repeat low dose programme (LDP). This is an overall post-emergence repeat spray technique for use on mineral or organic soils.

ii) As a traditional volume technique. In this case GOLTIX FLOWABLE may be applied pre-drilling incorporated and pre- and post-emergence of weeds, beet and mangels.

RESTRICTIONS

Factors Affecting Crop Tolerance

GOLTIX FLOWABLE exhibits great safety to beet combined with consistent weed control when used in conventional or low dose programmes as recommended. The beet plant is, however, very sensitive to herbicide treatments if the following stress factors occur: previously applied pesticides and herbicides (other than GOLTIX FLOWABLE pre-emergence or pre-drilling incorporated on mineral soils), soft growth after prolonged rain, sudden changes in temperature, high light intensity, high radiant temperatures, prolonged low temperature periods, insect and fungal attack, damage by wind blows, nutrient deficiencies such as manganese. If these or any other stress-inducing conditions occur, some cotyledon tip scorch may occasionally result, Under these conditions crop tolerance to GOLTIX FLOWABLE/adjuvant oil may be reduced, particularly when used in conjunction with other herbicides either as tank mixes or sequentially.

Uneven Application

Spraying can be uneven due to the movement of spraying equipment, ground undulations, proximity of hedgerows etc. This can lead to local high dosages of chemical and damage to the crop for which no responsibility can be accepted by the suppliers.

Other Herbicides and Adjuvants

Only herbicides or spray additives named on this instruction sheet or the current GOLTIX FLOWABLE leaflet are recommended by Makhteshim Agan (UK) Ltd in tank mixtures with GOLTIX FLOWABLE.

1. LOW DOSE PROGRAMME (LDP) TECHNIQUE

N B. The residual activity of GOLTIX FLOWABLE is dependent on the cumulative rate of GOLTIX FLOWABLE applied; therefore, if the full programme of post-emergence sprays is not used, residual activity and efficacy will be reduced.

Pre-emergence of weeds: On all mineral soils GOLTIX FLOWABLE at 3 litres in 80-100 litres of water per hectare as an overall pre-drilling incorporated, or pre-emergence application should precede the low dose post-emergence sprays.

Alternatives to Standard Spray

Crop Stage: 1st pair of true leaves at least 1 cm long (0.4”).

Soil Type: All soils.

Comments: Normally only one application at this higher rate is required, thereafter growers should revert to the standard low dose programme recommended rate and timing.

GOLTIX FLOWABLE/Dow Shield/Actipron

Tank mix

Rate of Use/ha: 1.7 litres + 0.5 litre + 1.7 litres.

Weeds Controlled: Broadleaved weeds*, Annual Meadow-grass, Creeping thistle, and improved control of Black-bindweed,

Weed Size: Thistles in rosette stage before flower buds are formed.

Crop: Sugar beet, fodder beet, mangels.

Crop Stage: 1st pair of true leaves at least 1 cm long (0.4 in).

Soil Type: All soils.

Comments: A single application of the mixture with Dow Shield may be introduced into the GOLTIX FLOWABLE programme provided the crop and weeds are at the recommended growth stages. Thereafter revert to the standard low dose programme technique.

Ensure the spray tank is cleaned thoroughly after use of this mixture.

To obtain the most effective control of Creeping thistle a second application of Dow Shield alone is necessary 3-4 weeks later

Fusilade 250 EW

Sequential Treatment

For control of Wild-oat, couchgrass, volunteer cereals and certain other grass weeds. Fusilade 250 EW + Agral in a minimum of 250 litres of water per hectare, may be used sequentially with GOLTIX FLOWABLE plus Actipron on sugar beet provided that a minimum of 7 days elapses between treatments.

Method of Use

Sugar Beet, Red Beet, Fodder Beet & Mangels

A programme of low dose sprays at the recommended rate should be applied according to the growth stage of the weeds. (See also under ‘Timing' below.)

Number of Sprays

The number of sprays permitted varies according to soil type:

Mineral Soils

Either 3 or 5 post-emergence applications of GOLTIX FLOWABLE/Actipron (1.7 litres + 1.7 litres per hectare) may be applied per year as follows:

Where the recommended pre-emergence application of GOLTIX FLOWABLE (3 l/ha) is made, up to 3 post-emergence applications of GOLTIX FLOWABLE/Actipron may follow.

Where a pre-emergence application of GOLTIX FLOWABLE is not made, up to 5 post-emergence applications of GOLTIX FLOWABLE/Actipron may be used.

Organic Soils

Up to 6 post-emergence applications of GOLTIX FLOWABLE/Actipron may be made in any one year. Pre-emergence application is not recommended.

Timing of Application

Use a full programme of low dose sprays of GOLTIX FLOWABLE/Actipron as follows:

The first application of the GOLTIX FLOWABLE/Actipron post-emergence programme should be made when the first emerging weeds are at the early cotyledon stage, irrespective of the growth stage of the beet providing that the crop is not suffering from any of the stress factors listed under ‘Factors Affecting Crop Tolerance'.

On organic soils, where weed populations are higher than on mineral soils and emergence is usually very rapid, it is particularly important that the first application is timed so that the weeds are not beyond the very early cotyledon stage.

Subsequent applications of GOLTIX FLOWABLE/Actipron at the recommended rate should be made when new flushes of weeds are at the early cotyledon stage - this is likely to be at 7-10 day intervals, but under conditions favouring rapid weed germination it could be less. Fields should be monitored every few days to check the development of weed populations.

The programme of sprays should continue until weed emergence ceases.

If weeds are still surviving after the previous spray, a further application should be made after 7-10 days, even if no new weeds have emerged.

The 'LDP Application and Timing Summary' section outlines the alternative mixtures or sequential treatments which may be introduced into the standard 'Low Dose Programme' of GOLTIX FLOWABLE/Actipron sprays, for control of larger weeds, improved control of certain difficult weeds, and control of additional weeds such as thistles, wild oats, couch etc.

Thereafter, growers should revert to the standard GOLTIX FLOWABLE/Actipron low dose programme of sprays.

MIXING AND APPLICATION – LDP TECHNIQUE

Mixing

Thoroughly shake the pack before use.

Add the required quantity of GOLTIX FLOWABLE to the half-filled spray tank with the agitation system in operation and then fill to the required level. Continue agitation at all times during spraying and stoppages until the tank is completely empty. Spray immediately after mixing.

When tank mixes are to be used, each product should be added separately to the tank; the GOLTIX FLOWABLE should be dispersed first unless otherwise specified under the "Compatibility - LDP Technique' section.

Application

Spray Quality

Apply as a FINE spray (as defined by BCPC).

The required fineness of spray and water volume per hectare can be achieved by selection of an appropriate nozzle/pressure combination and forward speed within the recommendations given below.

Filters

Do not use finer than 80 mesh filters in spray lines or nozzles.

Forward Speed

A forward speed of 8 kph should not be exceeded.

Pressure

3-5 bar (45-75 psi).

Water Volume

80-100 litres per hectare.

Nozzles

For best results fan nozzles should have a spray angle of at least 80°. When fan nozzles of the required capacity are used it is advisable to fit an 80 mesh in-line filter to each supply line to the boom.

As an aid to calibration, the following table indicates the output required per nozzle. This information is given only as a guide and sprayers must be calibrated. If pressures of 4 bar and above are used, nozzles should frequently be checked for signs of wear.

Black-Bindweed and Creeping Thistle

GOLTIX FLOWABLE/Dow Shield or GOLTIX FLOWABLE/Dow Shield/Actipron

Tank Mixes

Sugar Beet- All Soils.

Red Beet, Fodder Beet, Mangels - Mineral Soils.

Where creeping thistle is a special problem, a tank mixture of 5 l/ha GOLTIX FLOWABLE with Dow Shield at 0.5 litres per hectare, is recommended as a post-emergence spray. This mixture may improve control of Black-bindweed over that provided by GOLTIX FLOWABLE alone applied post-emergence.

Alternatively, it the annual broadleaved weeds including Black-bindweed are beyond the cotyledon to first true leaf stage but do not have more than two true leaves, or where dry conditions persist, a 3-way tank mixture of 5 litres GOLTIX FLOWABLE + 5 litres of Actipron + 0.5 litres Dow Shield per hectare will give best results.

Mixtures of GOLTIX FLOWABLE or GOLTIX FLOWABLE/Actipron with Dow Shield should not be applied until the beets’ two true leaves have reached the length of 1 cm (0.4”), Thistles should be in the rosette stage, about 15 cm (6”) across, but before the flower buds are formed,

Follow up application

To obtain the most effective control of creeping thistle a second application of Dow Shield alone is necessary 3-4 weeks later.

Wild-Oat

Although GOLTIX FLOWABLE shows some activity against wild-oat, this is insufficient where the weed is a major problem. In such cases GOLTIX FLOWABLE may be applied in conjunction with Fusilade 250 EW plus Agral. For details see below.

Wild-Oat, Couch and Certain Other Grass Weeds

GOLTIX FLOWABLE/Actipron and Fusilade 250 EW

Tank Mix or Sequential Use

Sugar Beet

Where wild-oat, barley cover crops and certain other* grass weeds are a problem, a tank mixture of 5 litres GOLTIX FLOWABLE + 5 litres Actipron and either 0.5 litre or 0.75 litres of Fusilade 250 EW (N.B. Do not add Agral as well), in at least 240 litres of water per hectare may be applied provided that the crop’s first two true leaves are 1 cm long.

Do not tank mix Fusilade 250 EW at high rate (1.5 litres per hectare) for couch grass control.

Alternatively Fusilade 250 EW plus Agral may be used sequentially with GOLTIX FLOWABLE or GOLTIX FLOWABLE/ Actipron provided that at least 7 days elapse between the treatments.

Fusilade 250 EW (plus Agral) may be used at the higher rate for couch grass control as a sequential treatment.

CROP SPECIFIC INFORMATION – Traditional Volume Technique

GOLTIX FLOWABLE may be applied pre-drilling incorporated and pre- and post-emergence of weeds, beet and mangels. Consistent weed control may be achieved by using a combined programme of pre- and post-emergence sprays of GOLTIX FLOWABLE. The addition of Actipron to GOLTIX FLOWABLE will improve weed control when weeds are beyond the cotyledon stage.

GOLTIX FLOWABLE is recommended for use in sugar beet grown on mineral and organic soils and red beet, fodder beet, and mangels grown on mineral soils.

Methods of Use

1. Sugar Beet

(i) Mineral Soils

GOLTIX FLOWABLE may be applied pre-drilling incorporated, pre-emergence or post-emergence of weeds and sugar beet or as a programme of one treatment pre-drilling or pre-emergence followed by a post-emergence treatment.

Pre-drilling Incorporation

Apply the GOLTIX FLOWABLE as an overall spray to the soil surface before the final cultivations. Incorporate by harrowing (straight or spring-tine harrows set 8-10 cm [3-4”] deep) in two directions, the second at an angle of at least 15° to the first. This method gives more reliable weed control in a dry spring.

In many situations, such a high degree of control is achieved by GOLTIX FLOWABLE incorporated that a further post-emergence treatment is not required. Where a follow-up treatment is necessary, follow carefully the recommendations for post-emergence weed control.

Pre-emergence of Weeds and Beet

Apply GOLTIX FLOWABLE as an overall or band spray at or soon after drilling to the freshly prepared, moist seedbed. Prolonged dry weather after application may reduce effectiveness. Best results will be obtained on a fine, well consolidated seedbed, free from clods and established weeds. Cloddy or fluffy seedbeds or very dry conditions will reduce activity.

Under circumstances suitable for the activity of a residual herbicide. the use of GOLTIX FLOWABLE pre-emergence will often obviate the need for any other weed control measures. However, careful observations should be made in order to assess the requirement for a further, post-emergence treatment, which should be applied as recommended below.

Post-emergence of Weeds

GOLTIX FLOWABLE should be applied when the weeds are very small (cotyledon to first true leaf stage) but not before the beet's two true leaves have reached the length of 1 cm (see Diagram A). If the weeds (particularly Black-bindweed, Fat-hen and Knotgrass) are beyond the cotyledon to first true leaf stage, but do not have more than two true leaves, the addition of Actipron at 5 l/ha will give improved contact activity.

Application of the GOLTIX FLOWABLE/Actipron mixture to weeds (in particular Black-bindweed) after the two true leaf stage is not recommended. Spraying with this mixture may cause some reduction in vigour under adverse conditions but the crop should recover and grow away normally.

For post-emergence applications, where GOLTIX FLOWABLE is used alone, best results will only be obtained if there is adequate soil moisture. Under drysoil conditions the addition of Actipron will increase the contact activity ofGOLTIX FLOWABLE to give improved and more rapid weed control

Apply as an overall or band spray, in the latter case ensure accurate alignment of the sprayed band with the drill rows (see section on nozzles, band spray application).

Timing of Application -Traditional Volumes

To ensure GOLTIX FLOWABLE or GOLTIX FLOWABLE/Actipron mixtures are applied at the correct stage of development of the sugar beet seedling refer to Diagram A.

(ii) Organic Soils

These are soils with over 10% organic matter which are predominant in the fenlands.

Organic soils have higher than normal weed seed numbers which tend to germinate in a series of flushes throughout the growing season. On such soils the residual activity of herbicides is reduced, and GOLTIX FLOWABLE is therefore only recommended as a programme of carefully timed post-emergence treatments.

Timing of Application

The first application of GOLTIX FLOWABLE alone at 5 l/ha should be timed to control the initial flush of weeds in the very early cotyledon stage and under normal growing conditions this will often coincide with the cotyledon stage of the beet seedlings.

Only on organic soils is GOLTIX FLOWABLE alone recommended before the beet's two true leaves have reached 1 cm. Under conditions of soft growth GOLTIX FLOWABLE may check the beet at the cotyledon stage.

Two follow-up application of GOLTIX FLOWABLE may be made to control later flushes of germinating weed seedlings.

If the weeds are beyond the cotyledon to first true leaf stage but do not have more than two true leaves the addition of Actipron at 5 l/ha will give improved contact activity.

On no account should GOLTIX FLOWABLE/Actipron mixtures be applied until the beet's two true leaves have reached the length of 1 cm (0.4 in) (see Diagram A).

Up to three applications of GOLTIX FLOWABLE at the recommended rate, including two GOLTIX FLOWABLE/Actipron treatments may be applied in any one year.

2. Red Beet, Fodder Beet and Mangels

Mineral Soils

GOLTIX FLOWABLE is recommended for use on all mineral soils and may be applied pre-drilling incorporated, pre-emergence or post-emergence of weeds, beet and mangels or as a programme of one treatment pre-drilling or pre-emergence followed by a post-emergence treatment.

Rates of use, application methods and timing are the same as those listed for sugar beet on mineral soils.

Rate of Use

GOLTIX FLOWABLE is recommended at 5 litres per hectare on all soil types.

MIXING AND APPLICATION – Traditional Technique

Mixing

Thoroughly shake the pack before use.

Add the required quantity of GOLTIX FLOWABLE to the half-filled spray tank with the agitation system in operation and then fill to the required level. Continue agitation at all times during spraying and stoppages until the tank is completely empty. Spray immediately after mixing.

When tank mixes are to be used, each product should be added separately to the tank; the GOLTIX FLOWABLE should be dispersed first unless otherwise specified under the "Compatibility - Traditional Techniques' section.

RINSE CONTAINER THOROUGHLY by using an integrated pressure rinsing device or manually rinsing three times. Add washings to sprayer at time of filling and dispose of safely.

Spray Quality

Apply as a MEDIUM spray (as defined by BCPC).

Overall Application

5 litres in at least 200 litres of water per hectare.

Band Application

To achieve the correct rate of GOLTIX FLOWABLE or GOLTIX FLOWABLE/Actipron, one of the following mixtures should be prepared:-

GOLTIX FLOWABLE

6.5 litres in 300 litres of water.

2.9 litres in 136 litres of water.

GOLTIX FLOWABLE + Actipron

6.5 litres GOLTIX FLOWABLE plus 6.5 litres Actipron in 300 litres water.

2.9 litres GOLTIX FLOWABLE plus 2.9 litres Actipron in 136 litres water

The solution should then be applied at 235 litres per hectare on a 18cm (7”) band.

Band Sprayer Nozzles

The following nozzle types may be used for GOLTIX FLOWABLE application.

Cone-type nozzles

Dorman A, B, B4 and D*.

Fan-type nozzles

Tee-Jet 8001 (flat fan)* / 8001 E (even flat fan).

Lurmark 01 -F80 (fan)*.

*(or other manufacturers' equivalent types)

The Dorman G nozzle which is specifically designed for band application of phenmedipham and phenmedipham mixtures must not be used. Flat fan nozzles can be used with any spray dilution as the band width can be reduced by twisting the nozzle at an angle to the direction of travel. This is not usually necessary for GOLTIX FLOWABLE application, the band width being controlled by raising or lowering the nozzle as required.

Filters

Do not use finer than 80 mesh filters in spray lines or nozzles.

Calibration

Before spraying check that nozzle outputs are uniform by collecting spray chemical from at least one nozzle from each section of the boom in a measuring jug for one minute. To ensure uniform distribution across the boom nozzles should not have a variance greater than 5% of each other. If output is more than 5% under or over the required setting increase or decrease the pressure accordingly. Once set accurately the pressure gauge should be checked at regular intervals during the spraying operation, but should never be totally relied upon as a means of calibration.

The area of field covered by diluted spray mix, sprayed on an 18 cm (7”)band, will depend on the row spacings as shown in the table above.

To achieve optimum results it is imperative that the band width is checked with the actual spray chemical to be used and set at 18 cm (7”). Failure to do this will result in overdosing if the band is too narrow or underdosing if the band is too wide. Always follow the spray machine manufacturer’s procedure for calibrating and setting up the spray before work commences.

An output of 235 litres per sprayed hectare on an 18 cm (7") band can be achieved by calibrating as follows:-

Compatibility - Traditional Techniques

For all tank mixtures or sequential treatments mentioned below, the appropriate product literature recommendations should be consulted and followed, and care taken to ensure that tank mixes of GOLTIX FLOWABLE plus another product are applied within the recommendations for each product.

Tank Mixes

GOLTIX FLOWABLE in the traditional programme may be applied as a two-way tank mixture with any one of the following products:

4 Fusilade 250 EW at the 0.5 and 0.75 I/ha rates is compatible with GOLTIX FLOWABLE and Actipron. Do not add Agral to this mixture. Do not tank-mix when Fusilade 250 EW is to be used at higher rates.

SUCCEEDING CROPS

Only sugar beet, fodder beet, and mangels should be sown within 4 months of the last application of GOLTIX FLOWABLE. Providing 16 weeks elapse from the last application of GOLTIX FLOWABLE, winter cereals may be sown in the same season. Mouldboard ploughing to a depth of 15 cm (6”) followed by thorough cultivation is recommended before planting any crop. Any spring crop may be sown in the season following use of GOLTIX FLOWABLE or GOLTIX FLOWABLE/Actipron.
